Workshop Proposal · FSE '27

1st International Workshop onSoftware Engineering for
Agentic Scientific Workflows (SEAS)

Co-located with FSE 2027 · July 11 or 17 · Shenzhen, China

A one-day workshop on engineering agentic scientific Workflows — bridging software engineering, scientific workflow, and AI communities.

About

SEAS brings software engineering, scientific workflow, and AI researchers together around one question: how do we engineer agentic scientific workflows — including the implicit workflows that emerge dynamically from agent behavior — as reliable, end-to-end systems? The workshop aims to establish a shared vocabulary and research agenda for specifying, analyzing, and evolving these systems.

Call for Papers

SEAS invites contributions on the software engineering of agentic scientific workflows — from specification and modeling to validation, provenance, and domain applications. We welcome research, experience reports, position papers, and demonstrations from software engineering, scientific workflows, AI, data science, and process mining communities.

Topics of Interest

We welcome contributions covering, but not limited to:

  • Scientific intent and workflow specification
  • Modeling and design of agentic scientific workflows
  • Dynamic planning, workflow composition & runtime adaptation
  • Workflow characteristics and knowledge representation
  • Coordination among agent, tool, data, model, and human
  • Data management and data engineering
  • Scientific constraints, compliance, and workflow invariants
  • Process mining & analytics from workflow traces
  • Coordination of multi-agent scientific workflows
  • Validation, conformance checking, and assurance
  • Failure diagnosis in autonomous scientific processes
  • Provenance, reproducibility, and traceability
  • Scientific workflow evolution and conclusion stability
  • Human oversight and scientific decision-making
  • Evaluation and benchmarking of agentic workflows
  • Languages, platforms, and infrastructure
  • Domain-specific applications and case studies
  • Empirical studies and experience reports
  • Safety and privacy over agentic workflows

Submission Types

All contributions are published as extended abstracts in the ACM Digital Library. Each submission is reviewed by at least three program committee members on relevance, originality, technical soundness, and potential to stimulate discussion.

Up to 5 pages

Research & Experience

Preliminary results, empirical findings, methods, or lessons learned from the design and use of agentic scientific workflows.

Up to 4 pages

Position & Vision

Emerging challenges, conceptual perspectives, or research directions — including provocative positions on agentic workflow engineering.

Up to 3 pages

Demo, Tool & Dataset

Systems, datasets, benchmarks, workflow environments, or other community resources.

Submission Policy

Per SIGSOFT policy, organizers and their directly supervised students, postdocs, and employees may not submit papers to this workshop, and at least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop.

Submission site coming soon.

Best Contribution Award will be presented at the workshop, with selected papers invited to submit extended versions to a potential special issue of ACM Transactions on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems (TAAS).

Accepted Papers

Coming soon. The accepted papers list will be published after author notifications on March 18, 2027.
